are there brakes on this thing we call life? October 31, 2006

i need to slow myself down, so if anyone has any suggestions, i welcome them with open arms.

too much happening at once – awesome things, awful things, menial things, meaningful things. it’s a lot to digest.

simple pleasures… October 30, 2006

i miss your smile

and the way your faces lights up

when i walk into a room

i miss your voice

and its pinch of an accent

it’s hard to see you

and share your space

without experiencing those

simple pleasures

great comforts

taken for granted

in the everyday

i anticipate the day

when i get those back

simple pleasures

such great comforts…

altruism… October 23, 2006

Filed under: so, i've been thinking... — Sarah @ 4:32 pm

i’ve been told that humans are the only alruistic animals. i’m not sure whether i don’t believe that because i’ve seen other animals risk their lives for those of others, or because i’m now living in the city.

regardless, i’ve been thinking about it, lately. for altruistic beings, we are pretty damn selfish at times. and we find good excuses to justify it.

why is it that a visibly very pregnant woman walks by 20 seated people on the subway before someone (me) offers her a seat?

why is it that an old woman who obviously has difficulty walking is forced to stand for 3 stops on the subway before someone finally vacates their seat ’cause it’s their stop?

why do people push ahead of other people just to get ahead in line at Timmy’s? (in my experience… they NEVER run out of coffee)

do people really not have time to consider others?

do people generally not care about the people around them?

are people that desperate for caffeine?

i’m not saying that i’m not guilty. everyone is. but i wonder why we pride ourselves on our altruism only to then adopt the attitude of “IT’S ALL ABOUT ME, PEOPLE!” call me cynical, or negative, or jaded, or whatever it is that makes me question people’s motives and come to the conclusion that we are selfish beings. but whatever it is, i think we need to acknowledge it and say “yes, it is about me.” is that not the truth? does that represent the majority of people? how many people genuinely care about the strangers around them?

how many people dismiss the homeless guy looking for a loonie?

how many children give up their favourite toy so another child can play with it?

how many parents encourage them to?

how many people would rather sit comfortably on the subway car, choosing to ignore the old woman who is so obviously struggling?

how many people sacrifice others for the sake of small conveniences and simple pleasures?

how many?

How does caffeine work?

Well, naturally, your brain produces a chemical called adenosine. When adenosine binds to the receptors in your brain, it causes all activity to slow down. Caffeine is similarly structured, so when it is present, it binds to the receptor instead of adenosine.

This causes the activity to decrease and the blood vessels in your brain to constrict. The body then reads this as a danger sign so it produces adrenaline, which causes a heart rate to increase and makes the liver release more sugar into the bloodstream, therefore causing you to feel a rush of energy.

Translation:: caffeine makes our brain go into code-blue?!… and the rush we feel is it’s effort to save itself… how pleasant

who the hell invented grating in sidewalks?

grating

i understand the purpose of drainage, etc… but the panic i experienced when i walked out of Dundas station, only to discover that the entire station was SURROUNDED by grating, was unnecessary.

no woman designed Dundas Square… at least no woman who ever wore heels! i had to tiptoe across the square to the safety of the street.

seriously, it’s bad enough to negotiate sporadic grating in sidewalks… but to ‘pave’ in grating?!?! dude. where was the focus group on THAT one?

Our Deepest Fear October 16, 2006

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us.
We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?
Actually, who are you not to be?
Your playing small does not serve the world.
There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you.
We are all meant to shine, as children do.
We were born to make manifest the glory that is within us.
It is not just in some of us; it is in everyone.
And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.
As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.
